Eric Garcetti Swears on Live TV: LA Mayor Drops F-Bomb at Kings Rally

By    |   Tuesday, 17 Jun 2014 12:17 PM

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti purposefully swore on live television while celebrating the L.A. Kings' recent victory in the Stanley Cup, dropping an F-bomb that the TV station wasn't prepared for.

"There are two rules in politics," Garcetti told the crowd of roughly 19,000 hockey fans gathered at the Staples Center on Monday. "They say never ever be pictured with a drink in your hand. And never ever swear," he said appearing to hold an aluminum Bud Light bottle.

Then, with gusto, he stated, "But this is a big f---ing day. Way to go, guys."

Fox Sports was broadcasting the speech live, and cut to an apology after the crowd rose to their feet to cheer the mayor. The apology did not mention Garcetti by name.

Within minutes of the broadcast uncensored clips of the broadcast were uploaded to YouTube and the remarks began trending on Twitter.

Later Monday night, Garcetti appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and Kimmel told the mayor, "I enjoyed your performance today."

"I got a little ahead of myself," the mayor said a bit sheepishly. "You gotta remember, we didn't win at lawn bowling. We won in hockey."

Turning to the camera, he added, "Kids out there, do not say what your mayor said today."

Kimmel then brought New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on the stage to settle his bet with Garcetti after the New York Rangers lost to the Kings 4-1 in the series. De Blasio sang "I Love L.A." with the help of children from the 52nd Street Project, which operates theater arts mentoring programs in New York City.
