Emirates airline announced it will begin direct flights between its Dubai hub and Panama, which would make for the world's longest flight.

Bloomberg News reported that the Dubai-Panama City route will launch on Feb. 1, 2016. It will outpace Qantas’s Sydney-Dallas route by roughly 10 miles for a total journey of 8,590 miles. That means a total flight time of 17 hours and 35 minutes, Emirates said Thursday.

In addition to snapping up the world record for longest flight, the new route will establish Emirates' first destination in Central America.

"Panama City will be our first destination gateway in Central America, providing a convenient option for our passengers traveling from or through our global hub in Dubai and onward to destinations throughout Central America, the Caribbean and the northern part of South America," Emirates CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said in a statement to The National (UAE).

Panama City is a significant trading port in the region, and Emirates' Boeing 777-200LRs can transport a large volume of cargo in addition to its 266 passengers. Pharmaceuticals, machine products, and electronics are all expected to fly the route. In 2005 the powerful Boeing model set a world record when it flew more than halfway around the world in a single go — 13,422 miles from Hong Kong to London.

While Emirates will capture the record for current longest flight route in the world, it will not capture the overall record, which was set by Singapore Airlines' route to Newark, New Jersey — 9,534 miles over 19 hours. The flight route discontinued service in 2013, however, adding a minimum of five hours between flights from Singapore to New York.

"Emirates will be adding four additional routes to its global network including Mashhad, Iran, and Orlando [Florida] in September; Bamako, Mali in October; and Bologna in November," The National reported.
