Elton John's Stolen Glasses and Thief Tracked by Fingerprints

Elton John's heart-shaped glasses, stolen from the Rock 'n' Soul Museum in Memphis over a week ago, were recovered this week after police traced fingerprints back to 26-year-old Matthew Colvin, a young man in Mississippi.

"We arrested him for bringing stolen property into the state and as a fugitive from justice," Lieutenant Mark Little of the Southaven police told NBC affiliate WMC Action News 5.

Little said that the glasses were stolen on April 21. They were stored in a locked Plexiglas display case, but the thief somehow managed to get it open, and make off with the celebrity shades.

Police dusted the box for fingerprints, and found that they matched Colvin's.

On April 27, when they called him to ask if the purloined glasses were in his possession, Colvin reportedly admitted to taking them. Colvin, who lives with his mother, offered to place them in the house's mailbox, and police soon picked them up.

The next day police came back with a warrant for Colvin's arrest, and threw him behind bars in Hernando. He will soon be extradited to Tennessee to face charges.

Colvin's mother said her son and his girlfriend had originally planned to visit the zoo, but opted for the museum instead after it threatened to rain.

"I really didn't think we would get them back," said Rock 'n' Soul Museum Executive Director John Doyle.

"The Memphis Police Department has many other items on their plates, more pressing than a pair of missing eyeglasses. Yet they still managed to solve this case. The museum appreciates how rapidly they responded…There is no way that Sergeant [Alexander] McGowan and the Memphis Police Department receive the praise that they deserve for their daily, dangerous and extremely professional service for our city."
