Ellen Pao, the woman who lost a sex discrimination suit against Kleiner Perkins in March, may have to pay the Silicon Valley venture capital firm's $276,000 in legal fees after a court ruled against her.

Prior to litigation, Kleiner Perkins offered Pao $1 million to settle the $16 million dispute, in which she accused her former employer of failing to promote her and later firing her, CNN Money reported. A jury ultimately rejected Pao’s claims of discrimination and voted in Kleiner Perkins’ favor. The firm then countersued Pao to try and recover $1 million in legal costs.

Pao, who is currently serving as interim Reddit CEO, refused, saying she should not be required to pay Kleiner Perkins’ “gargantuan and unreasonable charges," according to USA Today. The firm reportedly spent $865,000 just for expert witnesses to testify in the case. In response, Pao has offered to drop her appeal of the original decision if Kleiner pays her legal fees of $2.7 million.

Kleiner Perkins maintains that they "have no intention of accepting this unreasonable demand,” CNN Money noted.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Harold Kahn sought to find a middle ground agreement. The Fair Employment and Housing Act requires him to “scale” both sides’ requests, prompting him to rule that both parties’ requests had been “granted in part and denied in part,” according to USA Today.

Kahn cut the amount Pao has to pay Kleiner Perkins to $276,000. He argued that paying the full $1 million would be too much of a burden on Pao, but he also noted that Kleiner Perkins’ initial $1 million settlement offer was in good faith, and thus the firm was entitled to reparations.

Christina Lee, Kleiner Perkins’ communications partner, says the firm is satisfied with Kahn’s ruling.

"This tentative ruling recognizes that our settlement offer was reasonable and made in good faith. It also recognizes the cost rules still apply when a plaintiff refuses a reasonable settlement offer and forces the parties to go through an expensive trial," she said, according to USA Today.

Kahn’s ruling is set to be argued in a court hearing Thursday.
