A typo while paying his electric bill online means a New Mexico man overpaid his utility bill by thousands of dollars, and he may have to wait weeks for a refund.

Attorney Ira Karmiol said he didn’t notice that he had inadvertently added a fourth digit while making an online payment to the Public Service Company of New Mexico, KOB-TV reported.

He paid $2,787, instead of the $278 he owed. He said the company told him it could take three to four weeks to receive a refund.

"Their policy of weeks and weeks seemed very strange to me," Karmiol said, according to the station.

He expressed concern for others who may face a similar situation.

"They could get hungry, and they also might have a mortgage payment to make. And what happens if there's a mortgage payment and you can't do it? Or if there's no groceries in the house and you can't do it?" Karmiol said, according to KOB-TV.

Reader comments on the station’s website varied, with some showing sympathy for the mistake and others saying he should have been more careful.

"Every company, at least the larger ones, do this. 'Pay me immediately' and it comes out of your account immediately, but if you want a refund of that same paid money, oh, it takes their accounting departments weeks to get it back," one commenter, Nancy Hicks, replied.

Another, Donna Goin Malherbe, said: “He should have DOUBLE CHECKED his entry! It CLEARLY asks if you are sure you want to "submit" the payment. Now, as for them taking so long to refund the over-payment........that's ridiculous.”

“It's an idiot tax!! A 'typo' lmao.. You're just dumb, guy! Your bank knows better.. He saw the authorization screen and didn't pay attention. I feel no sympathy for a person who doesn't immediately miss 2,000$,” reader Robert Hamilton commented.
