A teenager in Washington state was seriously hurt during the so-called "Duct tape challenge," an activity that has gained popularity on YouTube, Facebook, and other video-sharing websites.

"I'm just, actually, really lucky to be alive," Skylar Fish, 14, told reporters from his hospital bed at Harborview Medical Center, KIRO-TV reported.

"When I think about it, it seems like I was hit by a car," he added.

Fish said the accident occurred Jan. 16, and concluded with him receiving 48 staples in his head, and the possibility of vision loss in one eye.

The duct tape challenge is typically characterized by a volunteer getting wrapped up in duct tape and trying to escape. Sometimes the person taking on the challenge lays on the ground, or is taped to an object.

Fish said he and his friends had done the challenge before, using a pole.

This time, however, Fish and two friends decided he should be taped while standing up.

"When he fell, he hit the corner of the window frame. It crushed his whole eye socket and pinched off nerves in his eye," said Skylar's mom, Sarah Fish.

"It was really scary, just seeing my son like this," she continued. "I want people to stop and think that there are so many risks to any of these challenges. They're dangerous."

According to the New York Daily News, a YouTube search for "duct tape challenge" yields more than 232,000 videos. Other challenges include the cinnamon challenge — in which people try to each large quantities of cinnamon — and the popular ice bucket challenge, which was used to raise money for charity in previous years.

"I don’t know what I would do if I lost him. They told me over and over that . . . he’s lucky to be alive," the teen's mom concluded, according to KCPQ-TV.
