'Dracula Untold' Movie Reviews: Doesn't Suck But Lacks Bite

The latest vampire movie, "Dracula Untold," stars actor Luke Evans, but even his charisma can’t keep critics from offering a thumbs down to the latest retelling of an age-old story.

In theaters now, “Dracula Untold” takes an unusual look at the vampire story, featuring Evans as Vlad Tepes, who makes a deal with supernatural forces to save his family. In a unique twist, he will lose his desire to drink blood if he can hold back from doing so for three days.

The movie has a 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb, 4.6 out of 10 on RottenTomatoes, and most of the critics on MetaCritics gave it “mixed” reviews.

The Critics Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes took the middle road: “Neither awful enough to suck nor sharp enough to bite, Dracula Untold misses the point of its iconic character's deathless appeal.”

Mike McCahill, a critic for The Guardian, blamed the film’s “thrown together” feel for his low score, and said it could have been endearing “with better editing and fewer cheap effects.”

“Its no-frills, B-movie modesty might have been winning, if it weren’t so dashed-off: the concluding sequel set-up is both more promising than anything preceding it and optimistic, to say the least,” McCahill wrote.

Los Angeles Times critic Gary Goldstein put a more positive spin on Evans’ Dracula offering.

“As effective and fat-free as its sinewy star, Luke Evans, ‘Dracula Untold’ proves an absorbing, swiftly comprehensive origin tale,” Goldstein wrote. “Director Gary Shore executes the competent script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless with admirable dispatch and a strong visual sense.”

The idea of yet another Dracula movie moved some online posters to sarcasm.

But despite what the professional critics are saying, many fans went online to say they’re glad this Dracula movie didn’t remain untold.
