Dr. Kent Brantly Statement: Ebola Patient Is 'Growing Stronger'

By    |   Friday, 08 Aug 2014 05:49 PM

Dr. Kent Brantly issued a statement Friday that he is "growing stronger every day" and that his focus remains on following God. Brantly is one of the two patients who contracted the Ebola virus in Africa and is being treated in Atlanta.

In a statement distributed to media, Brantly, a doctor who was with his wife and two children in Liberia, thanked staff in the U.S. and in Africa for his medical care and talked about what led him to West Africa in the first place.

“My wife Amber and I, along with our two children, did not move to Liberia for the specific purpose of fighting Ebola,” Brantly wrote. “We went to Liberia because we believe God called us to serve Him at ELWA Hospital. When Ebola spread into Liberia, my usual hospital work turned more and more toward treating the increasing number of Ebola patients. I held the hands of countless individuals as this terrible disease took their lives away from them. I witnessed the horror firsthand, and I can still remember every face and name.”

Brantly's statement said he started feeling ill on a Wednesday morning and immediately isolated himself until tests confirmed three days later that he had contracted Ebola.

“When the result was positive, I remember a deep sense of peace that was beyond all understanding,” Brantly wrote. “God was reminding me of what He had taught me years ago, that He will give me everything I need to be faithful to Him. Now it is two weeks later, and I am in a totally different setting. My focus, however, remains the same — to follow God.”

The African Ebola outbreak has killed 932 people, and the United States has ordered diplomats and their families in Liberia to leave the country.
