Doc Charney, the founder of American Apparel, was ousted as CEO this week following years of sexual harassment allegations and other accusations of salacious behavior.

Charney's dismissal reportedly "grew out of an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct," the clothing company's board said in a statement Wednesday.

"The company has grown a lot bigger than just one person and the liabilities Dov brought to the situation began to far outweigh his strengths," Allan Mayer, the board’s new co-chairman, told The New York Times. "The independent directors became aware of some facts we’d been previously unaware of. The only right and sensible thing to do at that point was to ask Dov to leave."

The 45-year-old Charney, who started his Los Angeles-based company in 1998, is know for his provocative photo shoots that fringe on softcore pornography.

"If you're offended by sexual innuendo or masturbation or sexual coloring books — if you're offended by any of these, then don't work here," he once said in a 2008 Wall Street Journal article.

What's more alarming, though, is the fact that he's faced nearly 10 sexual harassment lawsuits over the last nine years, some that have included accusations that he asked female underlings to engage in sex acts against their will, according to The Times.

"We take no joy in this, but the board felt it was the right thing to do," Mayer said in his statement.

Sources close to Charney say his ousting appeared to come out of the blue.

"He was totally taken by surprise, which is part of the problem," the source told the Los Angeles Times. "He’s going to fight like hell to get this company back, but he won’t succeed."

Charney still owns 27 percent of the company's stock, The New York Times noted.
