Doris Payne, a jewelry thief whose criminal career spans five decades and was highlighted in a documentary, was arrested for shoplifting at Atlanta's Perimeter Mall on Tuesday.

Payne, 85, who has been arrested more than 20 times for crimes as far away as Greece, France, Great Britain, and Switzerland, was taken in by Dunwoody Police and booked in the DeKalb County Jail at 6:51 p.m., 11 Alive News reported.

The station said Payne was charged with shoplifting after she allegedly attempted to steal two diamond necklaces from Von Maur worth $1,995.

Police were alerted to the crime about 5:15 p.m.

"In this incident, Payne concealed a $2,000 necklace in her back pocket and attempted to exit the store," Dunwoody police spokesman Mark Stevens told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"She is charming," attorney Gretch Von Helms, who has represented Payne in the past, told the AJC last year. "She's wonderful. She's eccentric. I understand that the shopkeepers have a different opinion, but they all agreed she was charming and friendly and nice. These are all adjectives that other people who have contact with her, even her victims in previous cases, would say describe her personality."

Payne's criminal career was captured tine documentary "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne" in 2013. A Variety review of the documentary, directed by Matthew Pond and Kirk Marcolina, stated audiences would be tempted to cheer for Payne.

"No one wants to see a charming octogenarian sent away for stealing jewels, especially when she frames her crimes as victimless acts of civil disobedience — payback for the way a less enlightened world treated her dreams as a mixed-race would-be ballerina," Variety's Peter DeBruge wrote.

"In retrospect, the supermodel-gorgeous, half-black, half-Cherokee woman can say whatever she pleases about her motives, but the fact remains that she's lifted more than $2 million in jewels since the age of 23 and, rather than face the consequences, escaped custody on multiple occasions," the review continued.

The AJC reported last year that Payne was arrested and placed in Fulton County Jail for several days on charges of theft by shoplifting. At that time, Payne still had an active warrant against her in North Carolina, showing she has slow down little in her 80s.
