Donald Trump once told Larry King that he had bad breath, but the business mogul and presidential hopeful explained Tuesday that the insult was actually a hypothetical one.

Trump, currently leading the polls for the Republican 2016 presidential nomination, was on "Morning Joe" with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Tuesday for an extended telephone interview when Brzezinski broached the subject.

"Wait a minute. Donald? If you're going to bring up stuff from the past — Did Larry King really have bad breath?" she asked.

"No actually — you know, that was funny," Trump responded. "I get a lot of heat for that. And I would never do that to a person."

He went on to explain how the rumor got started, putting in proper context his famous 1989 appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live."

"Larry said, 'You are able to put people off guard and to make people really uncomfortable, if you want. How do you do that? What do you do?" Trump explained.

Without missing a beat, Trump showed him just how he does it. "I said 'Larry, your breath is terrible.' And he goes 'What!? What!?'"

"He didn't have bad breath, actually," Trump concluded Tuesday. It all makes sense if you "go about three minutes earlier" in the video, he said.

King has mentioned the "bad breath" tale before, explaining to the ladies of "The View," for example, his encounter with Trump.

"First he let me pull his hair," King said in 2011, according to The Huffington Post. "And then once he said, 'Don't get too close, you have bad breath.'"

Video footage of the Trump-King exchange is now widely available in a recently released documentary about Trump, titled "Trump: What's the Deal?"

As Mediaite noted, King would go on to become a spokesman for the breath mints company BreathGemz in 2011.
