Don Lemon Apologizes for 'Victim-Blaming' Run-in With Cosby Rape Accuser

By    |   Thursday, 20 Nov 2014 03:32 PM

CNN anchor Don Lemon has apologized after he was accused of victim-blaming a Bill Cosby rape accuser he interviewed earlier this week.

Lemon drew sharp criticism for asking Joan Tarshis why she didn’t just bite Cosby when the comedian forced her to perform oral sex in 1969, as she claims happened, The Los Angeles Times reported.

He later issued an apology Wednesday.

"As I am a victim myself, I would never want to suggest that any victim could have prevented a rape," Lemon said. "If my question to her struck anyone as insensitive, I am sorry as that certainly was not my intention."

Tarshis says she was drugged and assaulted twice by Cosby in 1969. She is the fifth woman to come forward with allegations of sexual assault.

Erik Wemple criticized Lemon’s apology in a blog for The Washington Post.

"Factual problem: Whereas Lemon today states that he'd never want to suggest a victim could prevent a rape, that’s precisely what he stated last night as a premise to his question about biting. So that’s a problem. Though induction is very selective, Lemon may just get into the Insufficient Media Mea Culpa Hall of Fame with this one," Wemple wrote.

But Tarshis insists wasn't offended by the question.

"I was just kind of shocked, but I didn't think he was saying, 'Oh, you could have prevented this if you had just fought back.' I thought it was more of a good-natured, ‘Why didn't you just do that?' rather than saying, 'You could have stopped this if you had just done that,'" Tarshis said, according to E! Online.

The Twitter firestorm against Lemon continued on, though, even after his apology.
