Heartwarming Video Shows Dog Comforting Woman Having Asperger's Meltdown

A heartwarming video of a dog comforting a woman during an Asperger’s syndrome meltdown has gone viral, drawing more than 2.5 million views since it was posted to YouTube earlier this month.

The woman, Danielle Jacobs, said she posted the clip to show people what having Asperger's is really like.

“It's not easy to open myself and share what it's like on a daily basis. This is what's considered a meltdown,” she captioned the video.

The clip opens with Jacobs backed up against a wall in her home, sobbing and hitting herself repeatedly on the head. Meanwhile, her dog Samson uses both of his front his paws, as well as his muzzle, to swat her hands and nudge them away from her head. After about 20 seconds, Jacobs sinks to the floor and holds onto Samson while still crying as he nuzzles and licks her face.

“I trained him to alert to depressive episodes and self harm," Jacobs wrote in her post. “It appears the response is late but it's actually supposed to be as I'm coming out of the meltdown as I tend to have a panic attack after.”

Viewers were very supportive of Jacobs and shared admiration for her courage.

“Thank you being so courageous in sharing this video," one person commented. "Sharing moments like these will help others understand what it means to be on the autism spectrum. Please give Samson a nuzzle for me.”

After someone posted Jacobs’ video to Reddit, some viewers expressed concern about the “teenage trolls” who might post hurtful comments on the video.

“You're very brave and generous to share this part of your life: don't let misanthropic little trolls who only feel important when they're hurting others ruin the bravery,” another supporter wrote.

The Daily Mail noted that the video is the latest in a series of videos Jacobs has posted on YouTube concerning her experiences with Asperger’s, including one in which she was devastated after not receiving support in her quest for a college education.
