Dodge Ram Recall Expands, Includes 1.2M Trucks for Steering Issue

Steering problems in Dodge Ram trucks forced Chrysler to issue a recall of about 1.2 million vehicles, many of which may not actually need repair, the company said.

In a press release, Chrysler said 453,000 vehicles have steering-system tie rods that may have been misaligned during assembly or steering-system service.

“Chrysler Group is casting the net wider than necessary to identify those vehicles that require repair,” the release said. “Any found to have suspect tie-rod assemblies will have those components replaced at no cost to customers.”

The recall is an expansion of previous recalls, from 2010 and 2011, in which 264,000 trucks were recalled for the same issue involving problems with tie rods, MSN Autos said.

The recall impacts 2033-2012 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks, as well as the 2008 Ram 1500 44 Mega Cab and 2008-2012 Ram 4500 and 500 4x4 chassis cabs.

Chrysler said in the release that the company is aware of seven accidents and two injuries that have occurred because of the steering problems.

The company said customers will be notified by mail over the next month on how to make service appointments. Those owning 4500 and 5500 models may take their vehicles in to get interim service because replacement parts might not be available until next year, the company’s release said.

Most of the vehicles impacted are in the United States, about 968,000, while 157,000 are in Canada, 37,100 in Mexico, and 18,000 outside the region.

This recall is one of several for Chrysler this year. In April, Chrysler recalled some Ram trucks because of issues with parking brakes. In June, 37,000 Ram pickup trucks were recalled for lighting and front axle problems. In May, 474,862 Jeep and Ram vehicles were recalled for problems with the transmission, coolant and airbags.
