Disney World: Selfie Sticks OK, Just Not on Any Unpoky Rides

Disney World banned selfie sticks from its Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster on Friday after tourists continually forced safety shutdowns by whipping them out mid-ride.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that park officials had to go so far as posting a "No Selfie Sticks" sign at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom's beloved coaster, and urge workers to act as enforcers of the new ban.

Similar signs have been posted at Disney's Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain rides at Disneyland in California as well.

A Disney representative clarified that selfie sticks are not banned from the park altogether, just — as common sense would have it — not on its higher-speed rides. They can be taken on the rides, but must be stored properly with other carry-on items.

The rep explained that the new signs and employee training is "just a continuation of our communication efforts at a few key attractions."

According to Time magazine, an increasing number of venues are banning of limiting the use of selfie sticks, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
