A 24-year-old man fell to his death on Sunday as he was trying to stop a suicide attempt by another man at a University of Hawaii dormitory.

The dead man and the 19-year-old man he was attempting to stop both fell from the Hale Wainani dormitory about 2:05 a.m., authorities told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The men fell from a ledge on the 14th floor of the dorms, said KITV.

Both fell to the ground and were critically injured, said police. They were taken to a hospital, where the older man was pronounced dead.

Neither of the men were students at the school, university spokesman Dan Meisenzahl told KITV.

"The guy who tried to save the other one was a pretty brave dude," a 19-year-old university student told the Star-Advertiser. "I got to give him a lot of credit because I don't think many people would do that."

There were only 20 students in the dorms at the time because classes had not started yet, officials told The Associated Press. The dorm is usually occupied by about 600 students when school is in session.

Meisenzahl said the university is primarily a commuter school with about 4,000 of 18,000 students living in campus housing.

Along with its main campus on Honolulu, the University of Hawaii system has 10 campuses and dozens of educational, training and research centers across the Hawaiian Islands.
