Dick Maugg, the silent half of the Bartles & Jaymes wine cooler duo, died on July 28 at age 83, his wife revealed this week.

"They were really very funny, and much better than most of the advertising that was going on then," his wife, Barbara Maugg, told The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, California. "After they finished, a lot of advertising got better because of it, I think."

Barbara explained that the delay of her husband's death announcement was due to a cancer recurrence in their daughter, Karen Coset, around that same time. She died Oct. 4.

Beginning in 1981, Maugg played Ed Jaymes, the silent partner of the folksy Frank Bartles, in a slew of TV commercials produced by E & J Gallo Winery. The humorous commercials always began with a hearty "Hello" and ended with Bartles saying, "Thank you for your support," and were key in launching the wine cooler in the U.S.

Bartles was played by Dave Rufkahr, a cattle rancher from Oregon, The New York Times reported. He died in 1996.

Maugg was cast as one-half of the duo by chance, his wife explained.

He was in fact a contractor for most of his life, but was cast in the role by a childhood friend, Hal Riney. Maugg had built the San Francisco headquarters for the ad agency that landed the Bartles & Jaymes contract, and Riney, who worked there, thought Maugg was a perfect fit for the role.

Maugg is survived by his wife of 58 years, as well as three daughters and several grandchildren.
