Deputy Shoots Daughter Sneaking Home, Thinking She's Intruder

A sheriff's deputy in Virginia shot his teenage daughter, reportedly mistaking her for an intruder as she tried to sneak back into their home in the early morning hours Tuesday.

The girl, 16, the daughter of Loudoun County sheriff's deputy Easton McDonald, remained in stable condition. She was hit by a round from her father's personal weapon which was fired before he realized who she was, Sheriff's Capt. Donnie Lang told the Washington Post.

Lang said the incident happened about 3:30 a.m. The girl had apparently slipped out of the home near Winchester, 75 miles west of Washington, D.C., without her parents' knowledge and tried to re-enter the home through the garage, triggering the home security alarm.

McDonald approached the garage and heard noise coming from the area, Lang said.

"He figured someone had broken into the garage, and his family was upstairs asleep," Lang told the Post. He got his gun, opened the door and fired when he saw an unidentified person coming toward him.

Recognizing it was his daughter from her voice after the shooting, McDonald took her to his vehicle and tried to race her to the Winchester Medical Center, but lost control of his vehicle and crashed, Lang told the Post.

WHAG-TV reported that that the Winchester emergency personnel arrived at the crash site to take the girl the rest of the way to the hospital.

"We (will) confer with the Commonwealth's Attorney's office (to) reference all the facts, and once it is completed, determine how they want us to go further," Lang told WHAG-TV on whether charges will be filed against McDonald.

McDonald was put on administrative leave pending an internal investigation by his department.

Investigators told WHAG-TV that while McDonald was not hurt in the shooting or accident, he was "emotionally distraught" over the events.

The Post reported that he has served in the Loudon sheriff's department for 13 years.
