Dell Laptop Buyers: Cat Urine Smell Plagues Dell Latitude E6430u

Owners of new Dell laptops are complaining about a funky "cat urine" smell coming from the devices.

The cat urine smell appears to be limited to the new Dell Latitude E6430u, according to The Guardian. Dell was initially made aware of the problem in June.

"The machine is great, but it smells as if it was assembled near a tomcat's litter box," one customer on the Dell website said. "It is truly awful! It seems to be coming from the keyboard."

Another angry Dell user posted on the company's website: "I want you to know that I killed our 1 year old cat, thinking it was pissing on my computer each night and now come across THIS forum telling me otherwise. Not only do I want a new computer, I want a new cat, vet fees, letter of apology and payment for my divorce lawyer, since my wife has left me after finding this out."

Kevin Dane, executive director, reliability, validation and quality at Dell, tried to assure users on Dell's website Wednesday that the smell was not dangerous and there is a fix.

"When the Latitude 6430u was launched we received feedback from some customers commenting on an odor around the laptop," Dane wrote on the forum. "Dell immediately addressed the customer comments in order to resolve the situation and an investigation revealed that this was occurring as a result of a specific manufacturing process.

"We would like to reassure customers that the odor was not related to biological contamination nor did it present a health hazard. The manufacturing process has subsequently been amended and newly purchased Latitude 6430us are not affected by the issue. Any customer who has a system with the odor can contact our technical support team at 1-800-456-3355 or www.dell.com/support and we will arrange to replace the palm rest assembly," Dane continued.

The laptop starts at $900 on Dell's website and go up to $1,300 for higher-end versions that include Windows 8 and Intel Core i5 processors.

Dell told the Associated Press its investigation showed that the cat urine smell is linked to the manufacturing process, which the company has since fixed.
