Several dead babies were found inside an apartment on Thursday in Wallenfels, Germany, a town near the Czech border, and authorities are working to track down a woman that used to live in the residence.

German authorities initially said they found seven bodies in the apartment after they were alerted by a citizen, but later revised that number to eight, The Associated Press reported. It's not clear how long the babies, which were found wrapped in towels and plastic bags, have been dead.

Authorities are searching for the apartment's former resident, a 45-year-old woman, though they would not say whether she is a suspect, according to the news agency DPA.

The couple that lived at the residence recently separated, BBC News reported, citing German media reports. They supposedly had several children living at the property.

"I'm completely flabbergasted," Wallenfels Mayor Jens Korn, told Focus magazine, according to The Guardian. "We are a small, lively community with 2,800 residents, all of whom know each other. We are very distraught, and are of course all asking each other: Might we have done something? Might we have helped in some way?"

Police are currently waiting on the results of forensic tests on the bodies, which could come back next week, according to CNN.

A police spokeswoman said that determining the exact age of the corpses would "take some time," and a criminal investigation has begun.

"There are still many people we need to speak to and lots of searches that need to be carried out," the spokeswoman said, according to The Guardian.

"Germany has seen a string of infanticide cases over the last decade, which have raised questions about whether support for women and families is sufficient, and why women who may need help over issues of pregnancy and motherhood are not seeking it," the U.K. newspaper reported.
