Former CIA Director and retired Gen. David Petraeus will undergo sentencing in a Charlotte courthouse Thursday afternoon for providing classified notebooks to his biographer and mistress.

The New York Times reported that Petraeus admitted to his actions, and arranged a plea agreement in March with the U.S. Justice Department.

The charge exposes Petraeus to up to a year in prison, and a fine of up to $100,000.

Prosecutors are likely to seek a two-year probation and $40,000 fine in lieu of the maximum sentence.

Court documents say that Petraeus provided eight "black books" to Paula Broadwell in 2011, before he became CIA director.

Those binders detailed "the identities of covert officers, war strategy, intelligence capabilities and mechanisms, diplomatic discussions, quotes and deliberative discussions from high-level National Security Council meetings, and defendant David Howell Petraeus's discussions with the President of the United States of America," the documents claim, NPR reported.

The FBI found the books in an unlocked desk drawer in Petraeus' house in 2013. Petraeus initially gave false statement to the FBI about showing the books to Broadwell, and falsely swore when leaving the CIA in 2012 that he had no classified material in his possession.

Stephen J. Kim, a former State Department arms contractor, is currently serving a 13-month sentence for disclosing information about North Korea to Fox News.

His lawyer sent a letter to Petraeus' prosecutors saying that the former general's possible light sentencing that does not include jail time represents a "profound double standard."
