David Letterman Robin Williams Tribute Remembers Longtime Friend

During an emotional 10-minute tribute Monday night, David Letterman fondly remembered Robin Williams, his friend of nearly four decades.

"What I will add here is that, beyond being a very talented man and a good friend and a gentleman, I am sorry I, like everybody else, had no idea that the man was in pain and the man was suffering," Letterman told his "Late Show" audience on Monday.

Letterman, who met Williams 38 years ago at the Comedy Store in Hollywood, said audiences who saw Williams perform onstage would be in awe of the high-energy comedian with a rapid-fire wit.

"It's like nothing we had ever seen before, nothing we'd ever imagined before," Letterman said. "We're like morning dew, he comes in like a hurricane. ... He finishes, and I thought, 'Oh, that's it, they're going to have to put an end to show business.' "

Other late-night hosts saluted the gone-too-soon comedian last week, with Jimmy Fallon standing on his desk to declare, "Oh Captain, my captain, you will be missed," and Conan O'Brien, who broke the news on-air to his audience after finding out about Williams' death while filming his show.

Williams, 63, hanged himself and was found in his Tiburon, California, home on Aug. 11. Four days later, Susan Schneider, Williams’ wife, released a statement saying her husband was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease and had been suffering from anxiety and severe depression.

The day after Williams’ death, James Iglehart, who is currently playing the Genie in the Broadway version of “Aladdin,” led an audience in singing "Friend Like Me" from the 1992 Disney film, in which Williams voiced the lovable blue Genie.
