David Letterman Last Show Date Nears; Anticipation Brews Over Final Guests

David Letterman is winding down to his very last show and, as the date approaches, the veteran late-night host seems determined to go out with a bang.

That means getting guests like Bob Dylan, who hasn’t made a television appearance in 20 years, to agree to be on one of the last shows scheduled for next week, CNN reported.

And although there's no word yet on who will be Letterman’s last guest on Wednesday, Bill Murray will also be on Tuesday’s show with Dylan — the actor was also the very first guest Letterman interviewed when he came to the "Late Show," Time magazine said.

Murray and Dylan, who has appeared on a Letterman-hosted show three times before in the past, is following Tom Hanks and Eddie Vedder on Monday night’s show, CNN said.

The final Letterman show will air on May 20. Rolling Stone has been tracking each show in a countdown to the end, commenting Thursday night that the episode “was brilliantly, beautifully, casually weird; like the best Dave episodes of the past, it all seemed to make perfect sense at the time, yet left you quietly questioning your own sanity after the fact.”

The show RS featured involved scheduled guest George Clooney, who arrived bearing handcuffs, and Tom Waits, as well as a surprise drop-in visit by Al Pacino.

As anticipation builds leading up the the final episode, CBS said the farewell show “will be an hour filled with surprises [and] memorable highlights.”

Tributes to Letterman continue to appear online, honoring the end of an era:
