David Canary, the actor that played twins for nearly three decades on "All My Children," died of natural causes last week at an assisted living home in Wilton, Connecticut. He was 77.

The actor, who died Nov. 16, won five Daytime Emmy Awards and was nominated 16 times for his roles as Stuart and Adam Chandler over his 26 years on "All My Children," according to People magazine. One of the actor's former costars, Kelly Ripa, issued a message on Twitter Tuesday remembering Canary.

According to his Wilton Bulletin obituary, Canary was a football player, earning a scholarship to play at the University of Cincinnati after growing up in Massillon, Ohio. After college, he passed up an opportunity to play for the Denver Broncos in order to pursue acting.

Canary went to New York where he performed in theater, according to People. The Bulletin added that he also served two years in the U.S. Army after being drafted.

"David resumed his acting career and soon found himself in Los Angeles, where he began to work in film and television," the Bulletin reported. "He appeared in 'Hombre' with Paul Newman, 'The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre' with Jason Robards, and 'Shark's Treasure' with Cornel Wilde to mention but a few."

He played a physical therapist on the night-time soap "Peyton Place," acted in a two-part series on "Gunsmoke," which then led to regular role on "Bonanza" until that series concluded in 1972.

His appeared on "All My Children" from 1984 to 2011.

"He retired from acting in 2010 but returned to play the Chandler brothers for several days before the show's emotional September 2011 finale," wrote The Hollywood Reporter.

"Adam was underhanded, evil and one of Pine Valley's wealthiest men, while Stuart — who was introduced to the show a year after Adam — was his meek, traumatized twin brother. Adam often impersonated Stuart to get what he wanted, once locking up Stuart in the Chandler mansion for years," The Hollywood Reporter continued.
