Daniel Radcliffe said that Hollywood is racist but that things are starting to change during an interview Tuesday that also examined the "Harry Potter" actor's views on sexism and homophobia in the industry.

Radcliffe found himself answering questions about thorny social issues in Hollywood on a BBC current affairs show hosted by Victoria Derbyshire. She asked Radcliffe, who was there to promote his new movie "Imperium," if Hollywood was racist, BBC News noted.

"Yes, I mean it's pretty undeniable, that's the thing, we like to think of ourselves as being a very progressive industry but we have been lagging behind in all kinds of areas and it's been very well documented," Radcliffe said in the interview.

The actor also said the issue is evolving, the Mirror noted.

"I think there's lots of things about the Oscars, there's lots of amazing performances every year that don't get recognized. I feel like there's a lot that's unseen about the process. I do think that now these things have come up things are going to start changing. I'm starting to see it in scripts that I read," he added.

Radcliffe, 27, was the lead in one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, playing the boy wizard Harry Potter, a character created by famed British children's author J.K. Rowling, over eight films. The "Harry Potter" films rank only behind "Marvel Cinematic Universe" and "Star Wars" as the highest grossing movie franchise in history, according to Box Office Mojo.

Radcliffe went on say he thought Hollywood was also getting better in terms of sexism, crediting Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence with starting the conversation about equal pay for female actors, The Mirror noted.

"It's crazy that that still goes on, and it's also in department to department in the industry too," Radcliffe said. "There are some departments that are predominantly male, and again that's something that is changing, but it's interesting."

Radcliffe added that he thought it was difficult for gay actors to come out for fear of being typecast in gay roles.

"Neil Patrick Harris has made a career as playing the straightest guy on television, which is fantastic," he said. "It is sad, but there is a kind of line where people say, 'Oh no, people won't buy him as straight anymore.'"

Radcliffe was criticized for the comments on social media.
