'Dancing With the Stars' Shocker: Willow Shields Booted Despite Top Scores

By    |   Tuesday, 28 Apr 2015 11:05 AM

"Dancing With the Stars" delivered its first true shocker of the season Monday night when Willow Shields, the youngest competitor ever to dance on the show at 14, was eliminated with pro partner Mark Ballas.

The "Hunger Games" star, who had been a consistently high-scorer, was near the top of the leaderboard again after the judges awarded her "futuristic jazz" routine 37 points out of 40, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"The best part: those aerial stunts that weren't actually aerial," the Times noted. "Carrie Ann spoke a lot of Japanese in her critique, which probably meant that she liked it, but there were no subtitles so it's hard to say. Julianne thought it was intricate, and Len called Mark's mind 'fertile and creative.' Bruno said something about a crouching tiger."

Thanks to an additional two points from the dance-off round, Shields' score totaled 39, putting her in second place behind only Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin.

But when the fan votes were tallied, it was Shields that was eliminated, leaving lower scorers like "The Bachelor's" Chris Soules and "Shark Tank's" Robert Herjavec — who scored 31 points each from the judges — to dance another day.

"This would seem to prove that some stars have young fan bases who often don't vote, or maybe Mark's choreography this season was too creative," wrote Lisa Reynolds of The Wall Street Journal. "But for sure, we now have our shock elimination that will make 'DWTS' judges talk for years to come."

"Showing her age, 14-year-old Willow cried and couldn't speak," Reynolds continued. "The judges looked shocked, and so did the pros. Mark thanked Willow for taking risks, especially at such a young age. Tom Bergeron said he wasn't going to be a TV host for a moment and instead acted as a dad; he hugged the choked-up star."

Some on social media threw out their own conspiracy theories about the Shields elimination.

"Dancing With the Stars" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
