Dan McQueen quit as mayor of Corpus Christi Texas on Wednesday just 37 days after starting the job. He issued his resignation on Facebook.

McQueen convincingly beat incumbent Nelda Martinez with 55 percent in the vote in November in what was seen as an anti-incumbent election, reported the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

Questions emerged after the election about his educational background, his chief of staff hire and a series of Facebook posts he made that were viewed as critical of city council members, city staff, and the local media.

"Consider this my resignation," McQueen wrote on Facebook before his account was deactivated, said the Caller-Times. "I resign immediately. The city can no longer deal with such differing views and divisiveness. I step down from my position as mayor, in order to allow the council and city to regain focus on success."

McQueen later formally submitted to the city secretary.

In an interview with KIII-TV days before his resignation, McQueen admitted he didn't have a degree with "engineer" on it, even though he claimed to be an aerospace engineer. McQueen also tried to explain why he posted on Facebook that members of city council had only high school degrees but several were college graduates.

KRIS-TV reported earlier this week that it could not confirm that McQueen had an electrical engineering degree from Florida State University, which he had claimed since 2014.

"My bachelor's is in professional aeronautics, and my masters is in IT (information technology)," McQueen told the television station. "But what you've got to look at though, is what engineer platforms are from these degrees? And this is the model that nobody is listening to. Is this degree a path to qualify as an engineer? And the answer is yes."

KRIS-TV reported that McQueen hired Shari Douglas as his chief of staff shortly after the election, but learned because the two shared the same address since 2012 it could violate the city's nepotism policy.

After the election Douglas changed her address to a post office box.

Douglas suggested in his KIII-TV interview that he had merely helped Douglas out personally.

"All of my life I've been active helping victims of domestic violence, and teaching women's self-defense programs, things of that nature," said Douglas. "Now, when you give someone a safe haven, an opportunity to have their mail and get their life back on track, and people want to derail that as something else, then I think you've created even more of a problem. …"

KRIS-TV reported Douglas said she plans to step down as chief of staff.
