Damon Albarn, Blur Frontman, Forced Off Stage After 5-Hour Marathon Set

Damon Albarn, the frontman of Blur, refused to leave the stage at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark early on Sunday morning after a July 4 concert, prompting the stage manager to pick him up and carry him off before an adoring crowd.

Albarn was performing with Africa Express, a musical collective of big-name artists and lesser-known musicians that he founded. The set had dragged on for five hours when, a little past the venue’s curfew at 4 a.m., two security guards took the stage and asked Albarn to leave, according to Breitbart.

“Damon was clearly enjoying himself and wanted to carry on, as did all the musicians,” said Africa Express co-founder Ian Birrell, according to The Guardian.

A video filmed by an audience member at the festival shows Albarn removing his outer shirt and singing “Should I Stay or Should I Go” as he goaded audience members to beg for more music. Finally, after arguing for a bit with the two security guards, veteran Africa Express stage manager Dave Prentice, known as “Big Dave,” picked Albarn up and removed him from the stage.

Even after his removal, Albarn and the collective continued to sing from backstage as the audience joined them for almost an hour, according to The Guardian.

Roskilde is a massive music festival that included performances by Sir Paul McCartney, Disclosure, Florence + the Machine, and Pharrell Williams this year, amongst others. As one of the largest music festivals, Roskilde traditionally has had crowd-control issues, the most notable of which occurred in 2000 when nine audience members died in a Pearl Jam mosh pit, according to The New York Times.

In addition to his work with Africa Express, Albarn and Blur are set to play many international venues this year, including the Manchester International Festival occurring this week, where they will play wonder.land, Albarn’s modern reworking of "Alice in Wonderland." Blur just recently released a new album entitled "The Magic Whip" this summer.
