A cyclist who took a bathroom break on an Idaho trail accidentally caused a 73-acre wildfire that took hours for officials to get under control.

The unidentified mountain biker, who will be fined for his part in the wildfire, called authorities to tell them what had happened, the Idaho Statesman reported.

He had stopped in the Boise foothills Wednesday to answer nature's call, and when he was done, he set the toilet paper on fire, the newspaper reported. The cyclist said he tried to stomp out the fire, but couldn’t get it out, and he wasn’t able to call and report it. Continuing on the trail, he met someone else who was able to do so.

Typically the fine in such a situation is $250, the Statesman said, but the man also could be forced to cover the firefighting costs, which could run into the thousands.

"I guess when you gotta go, you gotta go,” Carrie Bilbao, spokesperson for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in the Boise area, told NBC News.

Officials said the cyclist thought he was being environmentally conscious by burning the toilet paper, NBC said.

The unique conditions of this wildfire drew attention online:
