Samsung and LG are selling 55-inch curved televisions, departing from flat screen televisions that have been popular for the last decade, starting Tuesday and will be taking pre-orders through Best Buy for two weeks.

LG and Samsung's curved TVs have concave screens, where the middle bends away from the viewer. The curvature is opposite of the convex bulge of the old cathode-ray tube TVs. The idea, LG and Samsung say, is to have the viewer see the television screen straight on, even at the edges, according to The Associated Press.

The curved television sets have a suggested price of $15,000. The sets' screens, formed by a thin, bendable layer of organic light-emitting diodes, are common in high-end smartphones, but larger sizes are difficult to make, which accounts for the high price of the new sets.

LG's television set will be sold in some Best Buy Stores. Samsung's curved televisions will be sold by specialty stores.

The curved television sets are made possible by a technological breakthrough involving the organic light-emitting diodes that allows the picture to bend.
