'Crying Piccolo Girl' Speaks About Viral Villanova Game Tears

A stunned and sad band member playing through tears went viral after Villanova's NCAA loss, and now "crying piccolo girl" is speaking out about her Internet fame.

Piccolo player Roxanne Chalifoux was one of many Wildcats fans stunned by her basketball team's first-round exit from the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament as Villanova lost 71-68 to NC State. But Chalifoux, shown on TV crying as she gamely continued to play, was quickly turned into an Internet meme.

"Well, it's been crazy. I can't find a moment to sit down," she told WTAE Pittsburgh in a Facetime interview. "I think it's funny. I'm not really that embarrassed. I think the memes people have made are funny. I just had a really good spirit about the whole thing."

A senior, Chalifoux said she became emotional amid the realization that she was playing at her final basketball game. She just didn't expect her response would go viral.

"I saw myself on the Jumbotron and all I could think about was that my dad was at the game," Chalifoux told Philadelphia sports radio station WIP on Monday. "I didn't want him to see me crying. Little did I know that it was going to end up all over the Internet and that [my dad seeing me crying] was the least of my worries."

Chalifoux's performance inspired numerous tweets and Internet memes, including one that merged her face on a screenshot from the 1996 movie "Titanic" and another that had her being comforted by Vice President Joe Biden.

"I can't even explain it," she told WIP. "I think it's like such a silly video and then that everyone just thinks it's hysterical. People made it memes, people put Joe Biden with me. Oh my gosh, how can you miss it? ... It doesn't bother me, I think it's funny."

In her WTAE interview, Chalifoux said, "The thing that really got me is that it was my last basketball game since I'm a senior and I wouldn't be playing with the band anymore. ... I love band. I love music. ... I love Villanova and my basketball team, so I'm just really going to miss college when it's over. And go 'Cats."
