Two jet skiers were rescued as the bow of a Carnival Cruise ship nearly clipped them near Port Canaveral, Florida. The quick actions by a port harbor pilot and a Brevard County Sheriff’s Marine Unit deputy saved the skiers as the ship came close to the two women Saturday.

A cruise passenger caught the rescue on video and posted it on YouTube.

Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer John Murray, credited the professionalism of the port’s crew, the sheriff’s marine unit, and the cruise ship personnel for the swift response and rescue of the skiers, who were both thrown into the water, Florida Today reported.

“If someone gets too close to one of these ships when they’re not supposed to, there’s no way it’s going to be safe,” Murray said, according to the newspaper.

The huge ship came within feet of the skiers, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

After Capt. Doug Brown spotted the jet skiers while he was steering the Carnival Magic, he immediately alerted marine unit deputy Taner Primmer, who had been patrolling the harbor. During his response, one of the skiers fell into the water and tried to get back on, but that caused the jet ski to flip, hurling both of them into the water as the ship was bearing down on their position.

Primmer rushed to the area and managed to pull them into the sheriff’s unit boat just in time. The video shows the ship coming within feet of the skiers and people can be heard screaming, “Oh my god! Oh my god! … No, get in!”

The hazardous situation was made even more dangerous because of a nearby dredge and the wind that was pushing the women right in front of the ship’s path.

“I was limited in how far I could maneuver out of the way,” Brown told Florida Today.

“I’ve had some close calls with small pleasure boats. This was the first time with people in the water, almost right in front of you.”

The women were identified as Skylar Penpasuglia, 19, and Allison Garrett, 20, both from Princeton, West Virginia.
