Couple Dies Hand in Hand 5 Hours Apart After 67-Year Marriage

A California couple died hand in hand, just five hours apart from each other, on Feb. 11 after being married for 67 years.

“They weren’t fancy. They were just decent people that were always committed to each other, no matter the situation,” daughter Donna Scharton told ABC News of her parents, Floyd and Violet Hartwig.

Her parents’ health had been failing, Scharton said, and her mother had dementia for a few years.

"Around the holidays we noticed she was going down," Scharton told ABC. "Then, I got a call from the doctor saying 'your dad has kidney failure and he has two weeks to live.' So, we decided to put them in hospice together."

Scharton told the station that no matter how badly her father felt, his main concern was caring for his wife. “He would tell the doctor, 'I'm OK I just want her fixed.' That was his concern; not how bad his pain was, but that he wanted my mom fixed."

When they could tell her father’s pain was getting worse, Scharton told ABC she and her siblings made every effort to keep the couple together.

“We said 'it's getting close,' so we pushed the hospital beds together as far as we could. We put their hands together, and my dad died holding my mom's hand,” Scharton said. “Mom was not coherent, but we told her that dad had passed away and that he was waiting for her. She died five hours later."

The end of the Schartons’ lives mirrored a scene played out by James Garner and Gena Rowlands in "The Notebook."

"In a cynical world of speed dating and swiping left or right to find love, this is exactly the story we needed to prove that true love does exist. Have you ever cried at your cubicle on a Thursday morning? There’s a first time for everything,” wrote VH1 about the hand-in-hand deaths.
