Cory McCloskey: Weatherman Keeps Cool as Glitch Puts Temps in the 1000s

By    |   Friday, 30 Jan 2015 03:36 PM

Cory McCloskey, a weatherman at Fox 10 in Phoenix, didn’t even break a sweat this week when his live weather map malfunctioned, listing temperatures as high as 2,385 degrees in parts of Arizona.

Instead, McCloskey stayed calm, drew laughter with his commentary, and created the latest viral video, which has nearly 2 million views.

“Wow, 750 degrees in Gila Bend right now and 1,270 in Ahwatukee. Now I’m not authorized to evacuate Ahwatukee, but this temperature seems pretty high,” McCloskey said. “Cave Creek, Fountain Hills, they don’t look good either. And frankly Wickenberg is a total loss. You might as well just get out of anywhere along (Highway) 60 here.”

Pointing to temperatures in the more usual range, like Chandler at 63 degrees, McCloskey said, “You’re sort of surrounded by some pretty intense heat. Again, I’m not your dad, but I would get out while you still can. I think steel boils at about this temperature, so Cave Creek, there’s probably nothing left up there right now. So don’t even bother looting up there. It’s not going to be worth it.”

McCloskey’s video took off online, getting millions of views and generating lots of comments.

“The best thing to come out of Fox news in years. Also, HELLO FROM ARIZONA, EVERYONE! Now please excuse me, I need to go use another fire extinguisher on the lawn,” one person commented on the YouTube video.

Fox 10 later interviewed its own weatherman about what happened, and McCloskey explained that technology automatically updates some things on his weather maps — like local temperatures.

“I don’t worry about that map. It’s never been a problem, ever,” he said. “When I turned around to the map and I saw the quadruple-digit temperatures, you know me, I immediately thought, ‘this will be fun.’ Half the time, I’m just entertaining myself.”
