A man was killed over the weekend in a boring-machine accident at the controversial Corrib gas tunnel about 50 miles off the northwest coast of Ireland.

The victim, a 26-year-old German man, died Sunday after an accident involving the tunnel-boring machine he was operating, according to U.K.'s Press Association. He was reportedly a member of a maintenance support crew employed by Herrenknecht, the machine's manufacturer.

Construction on the Corrib gas tunnel has been temporarily suspended as the Gardai — Ireland's police force — and the Health and Safety Authority launch investigations.

BAM Civil and Wayss & Freytag, the site's joint contractors who were appointed by Shell Ireland to build the three-mile gas tunnel under Sruwaddacon Bay near Aughoose in north Mayo, released a statement about the worker's death.

"The joint venture is cooperating fully with the investigations which are under way at the site," the statement read. "The management and staff of Wayss & Freytag and BAM Civil express their sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, whose details will be released once all his next of kin have been informed."

The Corrib gas tunnel will run under the bay to the Bellanaboy Gas Processing Terminal, according to the Press Association. Slated to be completed in late 2014, the tunnel has been a source of controversy for the region, as locals see the pipeline as a threat to nearby homes and environmental resources in the area.
