Colorado Road Shootings Linked – Are Drivers on I-25 Targeted?

By    |   Monday, 01 Jun 2015 06:49 AM

Police have linked the fatal shooting a cyclist on a rural road to the wounding of a driver on Interstate 25 in northern Colorado, but can't say if the shootings are connected to a rash of broken car windows reported by drivers on the interstate highway.

The body of 48-year-old cyclist John Jacoby was found May 18 along a rural road in Windsor, a town of about 19,000 southeast of Fort Collins, The Associated Press reported. Jacoby had been shot twice.

On April 22, Cori Romero was shot in the neck while driving about 5 miles away on Interstate 25. She survived.

"This week, we did recover evidence that links these two shootings together," said Windsor police Chief John Michaels. He added that his department, area law enforcement, and the FBI have been collaborating on the cases.

However, Michaels didn't elaborate and said he would not discuss evidence or possible leads. He urged members of the public to come forward if they know something and said the FBI will offer a $10,000 reward for information.

"The public will be the biggest assistance we can get," Michaels said.

The shootings have put northern Colorado residents on edge. The annual Pelican Fest Triathlon, a popular race in Windsor scheduled for May 23, was canceled because of the shootings.

Adding to community concerns are a string of unsolved cases of broken vehicle windows reported by drivers in northern Colorado since the I-25 shooting. But investigators have so far not found any evidence of gunshots in those cases, and on Friday police stressed that they haven't connected them to the shootings of Romero and Jacoby.

"I know there have been a lot of broken windows on I-25, car windows," Michaels said. "Those have not been linked to this event. That's not that they've been discounted, either."
