Cleveland Zoo: Mom Charged After Dropping Child Into Cheetah Pen

A Cleveland mom who allegedly dangled her toddler over a zoo cheetah pen and dropped him has been charged with misdemeanor child endangerment.

Michelle Schwab, 38, will be arraigned in Cleveland Municipal Court on April 22. The maximum penalty on the charge is six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

The boy, 2, broke his leg in the fall, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. He was never approached by the cheetahs in the exhibit, and his parents climbed down to lift him to safety. The fall was about 10 to 12 feet.

“While this incident is disturbing to everyone, we are glad injuries were not any more severe,” the Washington Post quoted Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Director Christopher Kuhar from a statement. “We have a number of eyewitness accounts that indicate the child was held over the railing and then dropped.”

The Dealer reported that Schwab, of Delaware, Ohio, is an assistant director at a Columbus KinderCare child-care center.

"[Schwab] is currently home with her family and will remain out of our center while this issue is investigated and addressed," KinderCare spokeswoman Colleen Moran told the Dealer in an email. "In addition to the agencies looking into this issue, we are looking into the incident further ourselves, as we closely examine issues involving the treatment of children by our employees, even if those incidents arise outside of our centers."

The Internet community was horrified about the allegations of dangling the child over the side of the pen.
