The CIA has long maintained a public website, as well as official accounts on YouTube and Flickr.

Their first Tweet because an instant classic.

On its Twitter profile, the CIA described itself: "We are the Nation's first line of defense. We accomplish what others cannot accomplish and go where others cannot go."

By 7 p.m. Friday, the CIA was already approaching 220,000 followers.

"By expanding to these platforms (Facebook and Twitter), CIA will be able to more directly engage with the public and provide information on CIA's mission, history, and other developments," CIA Director John Brennan said in a statement.

The CIA plans to use the feed for occasional press releases, information about jobs within the agency, or for facts about historic missions that have since been declassified.

Many on Twitter took the opportunity to poke fun at the secretive spying agency.
