CIA bin Laden Demon Doll Intended to Scare Kids From Support: Report

The CIA commissioned the design of Osama bin Laden demon-faced action figures in 2005, with the intent of distributing them overseas to scare children and parents away from supporting the notorious criminal, The Washington Post revealed Thursday.

Sources who worked on "Devil Eyes" project said the CIA developed the bin Laden action figures whose faces would peel off when heat was applied to expose a demon-looking rendition of bin Laden’s face, The Washington Post said.

The unnamed sources, who said they were not supposed to speak about the project, told the Post that Hasbro toymaker Donald Levine helped with the project. Levine was well-known for his work on developing the G.I. Joe toys in the '60s.

Levine died in May and his family gave the Post this statement: "Don Levine was a dedicated Patriot, and proud Korean War veteran. When called on, he was honored to assist our country."

A person familiar with Levine told the Post, "It appealed to [Levine] because it had nothing to do with actually hurting someone. It was the softer side of the CIA."

The CIA did not dispute that it had commissioned the demon dolls, but said that only the prototypes were made.

“To our knowledge, there were only three individual action figures ever created, and these were merely to show what a final product might look like,” CIA spokesman Ryan Trapani told the Post. “After being presented with these examples, the CIA declined to pursue this idea and did not produce or distribute any of these action figures. Furthermore, CIA has no knowledge of these action figures being produced or distributed by others.”

However, another person told the Post hundreds of the toys were shipped to Karachi, Pakistan, in 2006.

Photos of the bin Laden demon-faced doll were spreading around the Internet, bringing varied reactions.
