Actress Christina Hendricks spoke at the White House Summit on Working Families on Monday, saying it is time to do away with policies from the “Mad Men” era.

Hendricks, who plays single working mother Joan Holloway Harris on “Mad Men,” the acclaimed AMC series set in the 1960s, spoke of how her character has faced discrimination in almost every aspect of her job.

“It’s time for that story to go the way of the rotary phone and the typewriter,” Hendricks said. “Our ability to support our families should be based on talent, hard work, and responsibilities. This is not a women’s issue. This is a family issue. This is about everyone.”

The White House hosted the summit along with the Department of Labor and the Center for American Progress. The summit includes an announcement by President Obama of public and private sector efforts to protect pregnant working women, increase investments for research to understand the economic benefits of paid leave, expand apprenticeships for women, target resources to help more women enter higher-paying fields, and make child care more affordable for working families, according to a White House press release.

Twitter users were incredulous about the choice of a celebrity to speak about the issue.
