Christie’s Fiery Sandy Aid Reaction Sparks Sharp Response on Twitter

Twitter-happy observers took notice on Wednesday when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blasted the House, and more specifically Speaker John Boehner, for not voting on a $60 billion Superstorm Sandy relief bill.

Christie’s fiery news conference was emotional and politically entertaining as he repeatedly referred to the inaction as political games and characterized reeling New Jersey victims of Sandy as "pawns on a chessboard."

An hour after Christie’s tirade, members of Congress announced a tentative agreement had been reached. Boehner vowed the House would take action and that there would be a vote on $9 billion in immediate disaster aid for Sandy victims on Friday, and another $51 billion would be considered in mid-January.

Reactions to the bombastic Republican’s outburst were mixed. Some users used humor and sarcasm.

Heather Haddon, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, said she thinks Boehner will be forced to pay more attention to Christie after Wednesday.
John Stanton, the Washington D.C. bureau chief for Buzzfeed, said that although many lawmakers are not happy with Boehner right now, they will probably still vote in favor of his re-election as House speaker tomorrow.
Liberal pundit John Harwood, who observes Washington and national politics for CNBC, made a prediction for what the House’s decision could mean for the future.
David Gran, a writer for the New Yorker, reacted to Christie’s comment on the fiscal cliff in which he rolled his eyes and implied that the issues stemming from Sandy were more important.
