The student body president of Northwest Christian University came out in a school newspaper article as an atheist, and so far, he’s just relieved to have the subject out in the open, the Register-Guard reported.

In an an article for the school newspaper, the Beacon Bolt, last week, Eric Fromm said he began to have doubts about his belief in Christianity even before he entered college. But he chose to attend the Christian Oregon university because it had a strong communications program.

But as word filtered around campus that he didn’t believe anymore, Fromm found himself on the receiving end of “cold shoulders and verbal attacks,” he told the Register-Guard. So he decided to deal with the issue head on, penning the school newspaper article that led with the statement, “My name is Eric Fromm. I am a senior at NCU majoring in communications, and I am an atheist.”

The result, he told the Register-Guard, has been positive affirmation on campus, with students applauding his honesty and some even identifying with his views.

Fromm told the Register-Guard that he doesn’t want anyone to think he’s against religion.

“My objective is to never attack any religion or any type of person for being who they are,” he told the paper.

The editor of the student newspaper, Brandon McGinnis, told the Guard that it’s not unusual for students to raise questions and doubts about their faith.

“We as Christians have a lot to work out ourselves before saying, ‘This is wrong and you shouldn’t be here,’” McGinnis told the Register-Guard.

In Fromm’s upfront article in the student paper, he said he was worried peers might reject him for his different beliefs. But he also reminded them of an important Christian precept.

“I’m writing this primarily because I don’t want to keep my atheism a secret any longer, but I’m also writing this because I want to take my peers to task on their inability to accept those who don’t fit their Christian pattern. Growing up in church I heard a lot of lessons about how Christians shouldn’t judge others, but it seems like some people slept through that lesson,” he wrote.
