Charles Barkley took a subway ride in New York City Thursday, the first such trek by the Alabama-born NBA superstar turned TV analyst.

The 50-year-old former power forward had a member of his entourage videotape the underground trip, which most New Yorkers take on a daily basis.

As he descended down the stairway of Manhattan's Spring Street station, the 6-foot-6, 252 pound Barkley told those around him, "If you never see me again, tell my family I love them."

Barkley was taking the subway to the Barclays Center Arena to watch the Brooklyn Nets play the New York Knicks.

After hitting his head on the top of the turnstile, Barkley settled into a subway car where he took photos with fans and talked sports with a few straphangers. He told a few jokes at the expense of New York teams.

Sports Illustrated reported that at one point during the ride, Barkley reacted to a baby crying in the subway car telling fellow passengers, "I'm going to see the Knicks and Nets so I know exactly how that baby feels."

Someone then asked the former NBA great who he thinks will win, to which he responded, "It don't matter, man. Zero plus zero is still zero." The Nets wound up losing to the Knicks by an embarrassing 30 points, 113-83.

Barkley was escorted by two New York City police officers during the ride who helped him swipe his Metrocard at the turnstile.

Barkley, who scored 20,000 points and had 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists during his 16 years in the NBA, played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets. He is currently an NBA television analyst for TNT.
