A car hit a crowd of pedestrians in a crosswalk as they left a church event in Redondo Beach, California, this week, killing three people and injuring at least a dozen others.

Authorities arrested Margo Bronstein, 56, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and suspected felony DUI charges after the Wednesday night accident, according to NBC Los Angeles. Bronstein was being held at the Redondo Beach Police Department Thursday after being treated at a hospital for injuries, and was later transported to the Redondo Beach Police Department jail.

Police are investigating possible prescription drug use, NBC noted, as police said Bronstein was not under the influence of alcohol.

St. James Catholic Church had just concluded its Christmas concert Wednesday night when the crash happened around 8 p.m., church officials told the Los Angeles Times.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles asked for prayers for the car crash victims in a statement.

"A huge group crossed the street crosswalk when a car ran a red light and plowed into the crowd injuring a number of them, some critically," the diocese stated. "The community of St. James Catholic School and Parish in Redondo Beach, and the entire Archdiocese of Los Angeles, ask everyone to join them in prayer during this time of tragedy and grief."

The victims were Mary Wilson, 81; Saeko Matsumura, 87; and Martha Gaza, 36, all from Torrance, the Los Angeles County Coroner told reporters.

"The crosswalk was full and the light was red," witness Marco Zonno told The Associated Press. "Someone ran the red light and bodies started flying. It was pretty horrible."

KTLA-TV reported that after the vehicle hit the pedestrians, it continued and eventually hit a second vehicle head-on. One of the pedestrians involved in the accident was thrown into the air because of the impact and crashed into the windshield of a passing third vehicle.
