Canseco's Finger (the Smelly One) Lost Playing Poker, He Says

Jose Canseco has become separated from his left middle finger again, a month after the former Major League All-Star accidentally shot it partially off and had it reattached. This time he lost it in a poker game. He said the smelly, apparently rotting finger just fell off.

According to The Atlantic, Canseco almost lost the finger in October while cleaning a firearm in his kitchen in Las Vegas. After last week's poker bad hand, the 50-year-old former six-time All-Star, mostly with the Oakland Athletics, tried to get ahead of the story with a Twitter post on Friday.

"But it was not an altogether surprising turn in Canseco's testosterone-addled career," wrote The Atlantic's James Hamblin. "In recent years he has completed a transition from superhero to punch line, in a self-induced spotlight, producing fits of some of the most poignant id that any celebrity has managed to bring to social media. The events of yesterday and today, though, will surely stand out among the highlights of whatever artistic and academic documenting of the man's existence is to come."

Conseco tried to add some clarification and some levity with some follow-up tweets:

During his playing days, Canseco was the first player in Major League history to hit 40 home runs and have 40 stolen bases in the same season, according to ESPN. He was the American League most valuable player in 1988 but later became a whistle blower after the book "Juiced" exposed the use of steroids by him and others in baseball.
