Calico Lobster, Orange With Blue Spots, Caught in New Hampshire

A New Hampshire fisherman caught a calico lobster that’s orange with dark blue spots, a rare crustacean that shows up once in every 30 million to 50 million lobsters.

Josiah Beringer caught the unusually marked lobster in a trap in Hampton Harbor and donated it to Hampton’s Explore the Ocean World Oceanarium, Fox said.

"I've caught five of them including that one (over the last 14 years), but that is definitely by far the coolest by a long shot," Beringer told the Portsmouth Herald. "This one even had spots on his antennae. It was pretty rad."

Ellen Goethel, a marine biologist at the oceanarium, told the Herald the calico lobster is the second most rare lobster, coming in behind albino lobsters. The calico spots are caused by a pigmentation mutation.

This particular lobster is striking even amongst other calicos, Goethel told the Herald.

"I've never seen one this bright," she said. "It's absolutely gorgeous. It is really rare and it is pretty cool."

The lobster will stay at the oceanarium for the summer and then will be released back into the ocean.

"I always like to donate cool stuff like that so kids can learn about them," Beringer told the Herald.

Another calico lobster showed up in Florida recently, and thanks to Mary Beth Leitner it was saved from being eaten, WHDH reported.

Leitner ran into friends at a grocery store who pointed out the lobster in a tank, awaiting someone’s dinner plate, and told her how rare it was, WHDH reported. She started a Facebook campaign to save the lobster – nicknamed Libby for liberation – and succeeded in getting the lobster off the dinner menu.
