At least 30 people died when a bus plunged some 400 feet into a gorge near a hilly tourist spot about 100 miles northeast of Mumbai on Thursday.

The Associated Press reported the driver lost control of the bus after it collided with a truck near Malshej Ghat. A police officer said that the death toll kept rising as rescuers found more bodies in the bus wreckage. Two or three people remain unaccounted for.

The truck driver was also hurt, but a report on the extent of his injuries was not available.

India has perhaps the most dangerous roads in the world, and the country’s National Crime Records Bureau estimate nearly 140,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2012 alone, according to a report by the BBC.

Last May, 39 people died when a bus plunged into a river in the northern state of Himahal Pradesh. In October alone, 30 people were killed in the northeastern state of Assam; 20 pilgrims were killed in a wreck in Punjab, and more than 40 people were killed when a bus crashed into a highway barrier in Andrah Pradesh.

Most crashes are blamed on poorly maintained roads, poorly maintained vehicles, and drivers who take unnecessary risks.

Malshej Ghat is a picturesque mountain pass that is home to hundreds of different kinds of plants and animals. DNAIndia reported that the bus involved in Thursday's deadly collision was traveling from Thane to Ahmednagar.
