Brock Turner registered as a sex offender Tuesday at the Greene County Sheriff's Office in Ohio, after serving three months of a six-month sentence for sexual assault in California that drew national attention this summer.

Turner, 21, a former swimmer at Stanford University, faced scrutiny because of his sentence, which some considered too lenient and led to social media outrage and protests against the judge who imposed the sentenced.

Carleen Turner, Brock Turner's mother, attempted to shield cameras from her son as he registered in the lobby of the sheriff's office, according to the Dayton Daily News.

The Turners, including Brock Turner's father, Dan, left the sheriff's office without comment and were scheduled to register Brock Turner's probation with state officials in Lebanon, Ohio, the newspaper said.

Turner's Ohio neighbors will receive a notification letter alerting them that a sex offender is moving nearby, Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer said, according to the KNTV.

"We're required to check in on him, and we exceed our requirements sometimes, so we will check on him and make sure he's living where he's supposed to," Fischer told the station.

Turner will have to register again at the sheriff's office on Dec. 5, the Daily News reported.

Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky has been under fire since his June sentencing of Turner, who could have received up to 15 years in prison.

The former student-athlete was found guilty in March of assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, sexual penetration of an intoxicated person, and sexual penetration of an unconscious person, wrote the Stanford Daily. The incident happened after a fraternity party at Stanford in January 2015.

Rallies have been held in the San Francisco Bay Area against Persky's decision and Turner, and some organizers are trying to get the judge recalled, KNTV noted.

Carleen Turner called authorities twice over Labor Day weekend stating that someone sent the residence food that they did not order, and that cars were driving past the house taking pictures, the Daily News reported.

KNTV said some of Turner's neighbors have been seen carrying guns under the state's open carry laws. Some said they are not threatening to harm Turner unless they see him commit another crime.
