Brittany Maynard's Husband Speaks Out: 'I Didn't Want to See Her Go'

Brittany Maynard's husband spoke out for the first time this week since his wife decided to end her own life rather than suffering through terminal cancer.

Maynard ignited a firestorm of controversy when she announced she would end her life on Nov. 1, 2014, rather than face the tragic things that would happen to her body as she died from aggressive brain cancer.

A YouTube video she posted gathered more than 11.5 million views, and she also became a representative of the right-to-death movement, USA Today said.

Maynard’s husband, Dan Diaz, spoke to Meredith Vieira for the first time since his wife’s death in a segment that aired on "The Meredith Vieira Show" Wednesday. He said Maynard went for a walk with her dogs and her family the morning of Nov. 1.

"We got back to the house, and she just knew that it was her time," Diaz told Vieira. "That's the thing is . . . is you don't want to let go of your loved one. But to suggest that she should suffer for me, for anyone? No . . . That's what you struggle with. Here's the person I love and I don't want to see her go."

But Diaz said Maynard suffered a seizure that morning, and that helped to make her decision.

"But the seizure that morning was a reminder of what she was risking because what was coming next was losing her eyesight, becoming paralyzed and an inability to speak," Diaz told Vieira. "And then she would essentially be trapped in her own body."

Maynard and Diaz moved from their home in California to a rental home in Oregon, a state where assisted suicide is legal, Today.com reported.

Diaz told Vieira that he picked up the medications from the pharmacy that allowed his wife to go to sleep in about five minutes, and stop breathing in 30 minutes.

In an NBC News telephone interview in October, Maynard said, "I'm not killing myself. Cancer is killing me. I am choosing to go in a way that is less suffering and less pain. Not everybody has to agree that it's the right thing, because they don't have to do it."
