Brian Williams Resurfaces: Suspended 'NBC News' Host Attends Fundraiser

Brian Williams made his first public appearance over the weekend since being suspended as the host of "NBC Nightly News," attending a fundraiser and donating $50,000 to save to his alma mater high school.

Williams attended Saturday night's Save the Seraphs Gala at the Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands, according to the Asbury Park Press. The event sought to raise funds for Mater Dei Prep in Middletown, New Jersey, which faces closure.

School officials are scrambling to raise $1 million in two months in order to keep the 50-year-old school open. If not, it will close in June.

"This is Mater Dei. It's been a very, very important part of my life," Williams, a 1977 graduate, told The Two River Times at Saturday's event, which raised a total of $95,000. "It's a wonderful school, and it should be open for a long time, for everybody."

With Saturday's totals, funds now stand at $962,000, according to the Press.

Maria Buzzanco, co-chair of the fundraiser, said the organization was very happy to have the embattled newsman attend the gala.

"He had a lot of friends he went to school with," she told The Two River Times. "He was happy to come back to the Shore Casino because he went to proms there. He was greeted with warm hugs. Everyone was telling him how much they support him as well, and thanked him for coming."

NBC suspended Williams for six months without pay in February because the anchor "misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003," the Asbury Park Press noted.

Williams apologized on air Feb. 4 after a story he had told multiple times about being in a Chinook helicopter that was forced to land after taking fire in 2003 was called into question. He later revealed he was not actually in the helicopter that took fire after it was disputed by members of the 159th Aviation Regiment.
